Let Virtue Garnish Your Thoughts

Let Virtue Garnish Your Thoughts by Elder H. David Burton:

Elder Burton talks of him having to learn the 13 articles of faith before he could graduate from Primary. I myself became a member as an adult and did not need to complete such tasks. I feel that this would be a wonderful task for me to work on. I now have decided that by Christmas I would like to have all 13 articles memorized. Whew ... I can do it! I am horrible at memorization but I think this would be really good for me.

Elder Burton said: "A good parental example encourages emulation; a poor example gives license to the children to disregard the parents’ teachings and even expand the poor example." This is just such a wonderful reminder how important it is that everything we do be in line with what we know to be true ... no excuses or justifications ... just the right thing. It's incredibly hard but something I definitely aspire to.

I am really grateful he said: "By remaining steadfast, parents so very often suffer and agonize more than the children they endeavor to teach." Even with our dogs I have had the experience of knowing I was doing the right thing by disciplining them, but it did not feel good in anyway. Infact I know I was probably more upset about it then them. Man, being a mom to a child is going to be hard! But as I learned earlier in conference, if you truly love someone you will expect them to do what's right and you will teach them right from wrong, even though it will probably be hard. I can do it ;)
