Finding Strength through Obedience

Today when logging on to the Church's website I felt nudged to read Finding Strength through Obedience the Home Teaching lesson for this month.

I was so excited to see that it fell right in line with some thoughts and ponderings I have been having recently. President Monson talks about the world wanting to find their fountain of youth and the need to know all things. While we know we will live forever in the eternities, he points out that "in the divine plan of our God, we enter mortal existence to taste of youth but once." He says the key to knowing all truth is through obedience. He quotes President O McKay as saying that we all need to "keep the Commandments of God."

As mentioned in a previous post I have been pondering life and a fear I had of missing out after I die. I wanted to find a way to ensure, as much as I have control, that I live the life that I am supposed to live, and that I have the time to accomplish the things I am to accomplish. And I found the answer of how to do this in the commandments:

20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. (Mosiah 13:20)

Heavenly Father has given us the tools necessary for us to pass through this life with joy and success. He has given us the commandments. While I am still learning and understanding what each one really means and applies to every day situations and actions, I have them to guide me none the less.

Here is a quick refresher for all of us found in Mosiah 13 (15-24):
- Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
-Remember the
sabbath day, to keep it holy.
-Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;
-But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
-For in
six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
-
Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
-Thou shalt not
kill.
-Thou shalt not commit
adultery. Thou shalt not steal.
-Thou shalt not bear
false witness against thy neighbor.
-Thou shalt not
covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.

While these commandments seem so simple they are complex in their modern day application. Satan has a lot of new tools at his disposal and it is up to us to see through the dirt and move forward ever trying our best to become the person our Heavenly Father knows we can be through our obedience.
